 5. Summary:
The story is about a young girl called Sundara who lived with her aunt's family in Cambodia, a country ruled by the communists. Under such a regime life became unbearable for Sundara and her family. She and her aunt Soka and a new born baby  left for the United States on a ship to escape poverty and the Khmer Rouge army.  During their trip to America,"the land of the free  the home of the brave", they lost their little baby due to malnutrition, a situation that brought so much grief to bear on the little Sundara after she had tried without avail to save the little child's life.
On their arrival to America Sundara attends the same school and eventually meets Jonathan, who attends the same school with her,Oregon high school, and both of them fall in love but Sundara is torn between staying loyal to her traditional Cambodian background or adjusting to a new life style. The Cambodians define of a good girl as one who should not date a boy and chose to marry them, but rather wait for her family to make arrangements for whom she will marry. Sundara eventually  falls for the American way of life. 
 6. Classroom applications: The novel could be read in a unit of study on immigrants to America or America: a nation of immigrants. It could also be used to teach about cultural differences among the peoples of the world. Finally this book could be used to study systems of governments such as Democracy, Communism, Marxism and their effects on the people.

Author Information: Linda Crew was born in Corvallis in 1951, Oregon, Linda Crew attended Garfield Elementary School Highland View Junior High Corvallis High School Lewis & Clark College University of Oregon B.A. in Journalism She wrote other books including children's books such as the "Nehomah Creek" series. She also wrote adult historical novels such as "Brides of Eden: A true story imagined, Fire on the wind, A Heart for Any Fate and many more.  She is married to Herb Crew and they have three children and  now live in Corvallis
